February 14 Devotional Meditation:
KEY TEXT:
“Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.”- John 15:13
DEVOTIONAL
Beloved, let us pause—right here, right now—and bring our hearts before the Lord. Today on “Valentine Day” the world will celebrate Romance—calling it love, loudly for one day! However the Word of God and God’s Spirit invites us to reflect deeply on what kind of love we are living and encourage each other to continue to love one another with God’s love! To love purely to love deeply, and to love each other every single day.
The Day “Valentine’s Day” did not emerge from a single, pure stream. Its history is pagan, mixed, layered, and complicated. Long before hearts and roses snd chocolates, ancient Rome celebrated this demonic lustful feast called the Lupercalia. It was a fertility festival devoted to Rome’s demonic, fetish and false gods and their practices that stood in clear contrast to God’s holiness.
Later, the Roman Catholic Church attempted to redirect the culture by using the day to honor one St. Valentine, (who is not mentioned in the Bible) to remember him for courage, conviction, and sacrificial love. That shift was formalized under Pope Gelasius I, and centuries later its romantic ideas were popularized by Geoffrey Chaucer. So yes—this day carries a mixed history.
In the Old Testament, the Lord warned Israel not to copy the ways of the nations around them. “Do not inquire about their gods… You must not worship the Lord your God in their way” (Deuteronomy 12:30–31). God was protecting His people from absorbing values that would distort their worship. A Call Away from Pagan Patterns. God warned Israel not to absorb the spiritual DNA of surrounding cultures (Deuteronomy 12:29–31).
What is God’s Wisdom for Times Like This? As much as the name “Valentine’s Day” is unknown to the Bible and not mentioned directly by name, the Bible floods us with principles that steady our hearts in these moments: The issue was never a calendar date—it was the heart behind the practice. The New Testament teaches in Romans 14:5–6 that believers may view special days differently. What matters is being fully convinced before the Lord. This is not about legalism—it’s about lordship. “Whatever you do, do it all to the glory of God” (1 Corinthians 10:31). That includes how we love, give, celebrate, and spend.
A Charismatic Heart Check for Today
Before you decide how to engage with this day, invite the Holy Spirit to search you lovingly:Let the Holy Spirit guide you through these reflections:
Examine Your Motive (The Heart Check): Why are you participating? Is it covenant love—selfless, faithful, Christlike? Or is it comparison, pressure, lust, or performance?
Consider Your Witness (The Others Check): What are you portraying to others? Your freedom should never wound another believer’s conscience. Love builds up; it does not confuse or cause stumbling (Romans 14).
Redeem the Opportunity (The Purpose Check): What if this day became a platform to evangelize and to proclaim God’s definition of love in John 3:16? Jesus also said, “Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.” (John 15:13) Let our love be more than romance—let it be evangelism, sacrifice, forgiveness, service, and prayer.
Steward Wisely (The Practical Check): Today the world will market Romance—selling expensive and overpriced romantic gifts; but God calls us to manage resources with wisdom. Don’t mortgage obedience for appearances. “The borrower is servant to the lender.” (Proverbs 22:7)
A Final Pastoral Word
Beloved, the Bible does not command us to celebrate Valentine’s Day—neither does it forbid it. This is because it is unknown to the Bible! Valentine unlike Christmas or Easter has no Bible Hero or story! What the Bible commands is this: Live holy. Love deeply. Walk consciously with God.
PRAYER:
So today, lift your hands and pray:“Lord, purify my love. Align my desires. Let everything I do reflect Your glory. Teach me to love—not as the world loves—but as You have loved me.”I choose to Walk in freedom. To Walk in love. To Walk in holiness.
NB: THE WORLD MISSIONARY CHURCH INTERNATIONAL CHOOSES TO ABSTAIN FROM CELEBRATING VALENTINE DAY BUT COMMITS TO CONTINUE TO WALK IN LOVE! DEEPLY LOVING ONE ANOTHER WITH GOD’S KIND OF LOVE AFTER THE COMMAND OF JESUS CHRIST OUR LORD AND SAVIOR!
