September 8 Devotional Meditation

By Dr Patrick Elijah Anyomi

Key Text:

Matthew 8:26–27 (NIV):“He replied, ‘You of little faith, why are you so afraid?’ Then he got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm. The men were amazed and asked, ‘What kind of man is this? Even the winds and the waves obey him!’”

Devotional Meditation

Life is full of storms—some literal, many emotional, relational, or financial. In this passage, the disciples find themselves in a violent squall, fearing for their lives while Jesus sleeps in the boat. They cry out in panic, and His response is striking: “Why are you so afraid?” It wasn’t a dismissal of their real danger but an invitation to see beyond it—to see Him. To understand He is the one who has the power to command their storms!

With just a word, Jesus rebuked the winds and waves, and there was complete calm. The same voice that spoke creation into being (Genesis 1) spoke peace into their storm; into chaos! The laws of nature yielded to the Lord of nature. This wasn’t luck or coincidence; it was divine authority on display.

The disciples asked, “What kind of man is this?” He is the kind of Man—and the kind of God—who rules over everything: physical storms, spiritual battles, broken systems, and impossible situations. Nothing is beyond His command.

If He can calm a stormy sea with a word, He can calm the  storm in your life today! He can calm turmoil in your mind. If He can command the winds, He can shift the circumstances in your life that feel out of control. You don’t have to face the storm alone—or in fear. You can face it with the One who commands your storms!!

A Time of Prayer:

My Father in the name of your Son Jesus, You see the storms raging in and around me today. Forgive my fear and my little faith. I confess that often I focus more on the wind and waves than on Your presence and power.I ask You now to speak peace into what feels chaotic. Calm my heart first, and then work supernaturally in my situation. I trust that You are Lord over all—the physical and the spiritual—and nothing is too difficult for You. Help me to rest in Your authority and love.In Jesus’ mighty name I pray Amen.
